Sleep is very important to our overall well-being. If we do not rest, we will not be able to function normally. Lack of sleep is also linked to chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and even depression.
If you wake up at night and can't get back to sleep, you can try a simple trick. If you can't fall asleep after waking up, get up and move to another quiet part of the apartment or house. Cover yourself and try to sleep. You can also go back to bed when you feel that you have calmed down enough to fall asleep. A change of environment can have a beneficial effect, calm us down, and help us fall back to sleep.
Try moving to the couch, covering yourself with a blanket, and just lying down. If it suits you, you can turn on some white noise on YouTube, like water, a hair dryer, or a heartbeat, to help you relax. This technique is very effective and even better than drugs.
Otherwise, if night awakenings bother you at all, make sure your bedroom is cooler first. If you sleep in a warm room, you will be more prone to restlessness and nightmares. Also, make sure you don't drink too much water before bed so you don't have to go to the bathroom often.
