Sleep is often the first thing I sacrifice in my busy life. But as I learn more about sleep science, it’s clear that skimping on rest has serious implications for my health. If I—or anyone else—consistently sleep less than the recommended seven hours a night, it can lead to significant health issues. From skin problems to obesity, the consequences are sobering.


Hormonal Changes


When I don’t get enough sleep, my hormones can spiral out of control. For instance, cortisol, known as the stress hormone, can spike, increasing my stress and anxiety levels.


Additionally, my appetite-regulating hormones, ghrelin and leptin, take a hit. Ghrelin increases, making me feel hungrier, while leptin decreases, so I struggle to feel full. This imbalance can lead to weight gain.
