For example, instead of setting a vague goal like "improve my figure," a specific goal would be "by the end of the year, I will be able to run five kilometres a day."
Then, the goal must be Measurable. The goal must be measurable to track progress and determine what success is. For this criterion to be fulfilled, questions such as how much, how many times, or how often should be answered. Using measurable quantities or certain indicators makes it possible to measure progress. For example, if your goal is to increase production, a measurable goal can be set - "to achieve an increase of 10 percent by the end of the quarter."
Also, the goals must be realistic and Attainable. Setting feasible and attainable goals means that they are within reach, and it is realistic to expect their realization given the resources, skills, and circumstances. While it's important to challenge yourself, setting unrealistic goals can lead to frustration and demotivation. Consider your abilities and the support you can expect when setting goals to increase the likelihood of success.
Next comes the Relevant component. A relevant goal is one that aligns with your value system, priorities, and long-term goals. Assess the relevance of your goal by thinking about how it fits into your larger vision and whether it supports your personal or professional ambitions and intentions.
The time limit is also a very important part because giving a time frame to your goal will create a sense of urgency and accountability. Set a clear deadline or date for achieving the goal. This helps you stay focused, motivated, and organized. Without the time limit for the goals, it may happen that they are not realized at all because there is a lack of direction and motivation.
To summarize, SMART goals serve as a roadmap to success by making goals specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Whether you're striving for personal growth, advancing your career, or striving for business success, incorporating the SMART criteria into your goal-setting process can lead to greater clarity, focus, and realistic achievement.
