Today, social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Twitter have become essential parts of our daily lives, serving as our primary connection to the world. They provide instant outlets for communication, entertainment, and information. However, the lure of social media comes with significant risks, particularly for our mental health.

The first few moments without smart devices would feel liberating yet unsettling. Not having access to my phone would initially create a sense of freedom—freedom from the compulsive need to check notifications. But that freedom could quickly turn into anxiety. Would I miss an important message or a trending topic? The thought alone sends ripples of discomfort through me.

The pursuit of social media approval often morphs into addictive behaviour, diminishing our happiness and self-acceptance.

Throughout my day without digital distractions, I am reminded of how many people use social networks as a way to escape unpleasant emotions. It is easy to retreat online when faced with stress or anxiety. A single click can provide a diversion, but this quick fix can have long-term consequences.


Avoiding feelings does not make them disappear; instead, unprocessed emotions can build up, often becoming anxiety, stress, or dissatisfaction. By unplugging, I confront these emotions, leading to a more authentic living experience.

As the day continues, the fear of missing out (FOMO) begins to creep back into my thoughts. What might my friends be doing? What news could I be missing? This fear serves as a reminder of how social media can create an overwhelming sense of urgency and obligation.


Being constantly connected pressures us to react immediately. A notification becomes a call to action, leading us to worry that if we don't respond quickly, we might be forgotten. This burden of being “always available” raises anxiety levels and diminishes our focus on more immediate tasks.

As night falls, I reflect on my experiences throughout the day. I appreciate how liberating it was to indulge in simple pleasures—walking outside, reading an actual book, or sitting quietly with my thoughts. Disconnecting from social media allowed me to reconnect with myself in unexpected ways.
