How much sleep really is enough?

For general health and quality of life, sleep is essential. Getting enough of it enables us to perform throughout the day and maintains our bodies and minds functioning.

The amount of sleep that each person requires varies with the phases of life, and it also varies somewhat based on the person, their surroundings, behavior, and state of health.

  • Infants (4 to 12 months) need 12 to 16 hours, including naps

  • Toddlers (1 to 2 years) need 11 to 14 hours, including naps

  • Pre-schoolers (3 to 5 years) need 10 to 13 hours, including naps

  • School-aged children (6 to 12 years) need 9 to 12 hours

  • Teenagers (13 to 18 years) need 8 to 10 hours

  • Adults need 7 or more hours

In addition to getting the required amount of sleep, you may tell you've had enough sleep if you wake up feeling rejuvenated and able to go throughout your day without experiencing excessive tiredness.

Getting adequate sleep is essential to keeping the body and mind in good working order. Your particular needs for sleep are shaped by your biology, lifestyle, and surroundings. A sleep schedule ranging from 5 to 11 hours each night is deemed typical.
