4 Useful Advices on How to Stop Overthinking

Overthinking, a phenomenon in which people think too much about problems, about their past or future, brings with it negative consequences such as stress and lack of sleep. Such a way of life can be very harmful for a person and increase the level of stress, cause headaches, insomnia, and fear of the future.

Therefore, below we provide some tips on how to prevent overthinking.

Set time limits

When a person begins to worry obsessively about a question from the future, one may wonder if it will be important in a month or a year. Most often the answer will be negative, and this can calm the thinking. Decision-making also creates excellent foundations for overthinking. That's why it's smart to set time limits—a maximum of half an hour—in which to make a decision. After that, there is no more thinking.

Repeating positive mantras

This may seem like a cliché, but it can really help, especially before bed. People who have trouble sleeping and toss and turn in bed can repeat positive thoughts in their heads, with which they will wake up the next morning and continue the day in that tone.

Write down all your thoughts and the environment in which they arose

It is important to know what the main thought is that a person keeps repeating in his head. For some, it is the fear of failure, while others constantly go back to the past and think about old mistakes. In such situations, it is advised that a person writes down all his thoughts and the environment in which they occurred in order to find the exact cause and trigger of his excessive thinking.

Exercising

Exercise and new hobbies are a great way to combat this problem because they occupy the brain with other activities. In addition, people generally feel better and happier after training. Finding a hobby, like learning a new language or enrolling in a workshop, can only bring positive effects.

With overthinking, it is important to live in the present and focus only on what is present. Although it is impossible to never think about what will be or what has been, by using these techniques, the frequency of such thinking can be reduced.
